COUNTDOWN TO EUROVISION : Iceland

Well it's now May and that can only mean one thing - the Eurovision Song Contest isn't far away. It's now just a week and a half before entrants from across Europe descend on the Azerbaijani capital Baku to take part in the first of the semi finals in this year's competition. Each semi final consists of 18 performances, with just ten performers from each making it through to the 2012 Grand Final on Saturday May 26, where the 'big five' of the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, along with the host nation Azerbaijan, will be waiting for them. Here at auspOp, we're continuing our daily look at each of the competitors' songs in the lead-up to Eurovision 2012.

GRÉTA SALÓME & JÓNSI : Never Forget

You know, for a fleeting moment there, we thought perhaps that the "Jónsi" that appeared on this track was the lead singer of Sigur Ros "Jónsi" who's also an Icelandic native. Turns out that's not the case and this Jónsi is one of the most popular solo singers in the country. It's not the first time he's represented Iceland at Eurovision either - having previously competed in 2004. Performing in the duet 'Never Forget' alongside him will be the song's writer - 25 year old Gréta Salóme. Turns out that Gréta's quite the violin player too...
It's quite dramatic - with plenty of sweeping strings and acrobatic vocals that are set against a backdrop that'll do nothing to help you feel warmer as winter's cold approaches. We're liking that the singers' voices complement each other beautifully and a little flash of the Northern Lights at the end of the clip. Hope you're wearing your thermals...
